Combs Wood is a special natural area covering 15.1 hectares (about 37 acres). It is located near Stowmarket in Suffolk, England. This beautiful woodland is owned and looked after by the Suffolk Wildlife Trust.

It's a very old woodland that has been managed for a long time using a method called coppicing. The soil here is mostly made of boulder clay, but it also has different amounts of sand and a fine dust called loess. This mix creates different types of soil across the wood.

What Makes Combs Wood Special?

Combs Wood is officially known as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). This means it's a protected area because of its important plants and animals. It's a great place to learn about nature.

Exploring the Habitats

The types of trees growing in Combs Wood depend on the soil.

  • In some parts, you'll find pedunculate oak and hornbeam trees. Here, the plants growing on the ground are not very dense.
  • Other areas have more ash and maple trees. These spots have a rich variety of ground plants, making them very diverse.

The wood also has open, grassy paths called "rides." There is also a pond. These areas provide extra homes for many small creatures without backbones, like insects and spiders, which are called invertebrates.

You can visit Combs Wood and explore its natural beauty. There are paths that lead into the wood. You can enter through the church grounds or by going through Holyoak Farm. It's a wonderful place for a walk and to discover local wildlife.
