What Does It Look Like?
The Euphaedra themis butterfly has a mostly black color on its upper wings. However, it also features bright patches of green, blue, orange-yellow, or whitish colors. These colorful areas usually cover more than half of the hindwing and the back edge of the forewing.
If you look at the underside of its wings, you'll notice strong black markings. On the forewing, there are spots near the outer edge that form a straight line. There's also a long spot in a specific cell (cellule 2) that reaches the middle of that cell.
Some Euphaedra themis butterflies have a clear, light band near the tip of their forewing on the underside. On the upper side, they might have a red spot near the base of the wing. This band can be gold-yellow in males or yellow/whitish in females. It's usually made up of three or four spots.
Where Does It Live?
The common Themis forester butterfly prefers to live in drier forests. It can also be found in forests that have been changed or disturbed by human activity.
What Do Its Babies Eat?
The young butterflies, called larvae or caterpillars, might feed on a plant called Deinbollia pinnata. This plant is important for their growth and development.
How Did It Get Its Name?
The name Themis comes from the Classical tradition. It is named after Themis, a goddess from ancient Greek mythology.
