Commonwealth and Protectorate facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Commonwealth and Protectorate was a unique time in the history of England, Scotland, and Ireland. For 11 years, from 1649 to 1660, these countries had no king. This period happened between the reigns of King Charles I and his son, King Charles II. It was a time of big changes after the English Civil War.

What Was the Commonwealth and Protectorate?

This period is known by two main names:

  • The Commonwealth of England (1649-1653 and 1659-1660): During this time, the country was ruled by Parliament.
  • The Protectorate (1653-1659): This was when a powerful leader called the Lord Protector was in charge. The first Lord Protector was Oliver Cromwell, followed by his son, Richard Cromwell.

A Time Without a King

Before 1649, England had always been ruled by kings and queens. But after a long and bloody conflict called the English Civil War, King Charles I was executed. This was a huge event that changed everything. For the first time, England became a republic, meaning it was run by elected representatives instead of a monarch.

The Commonwealth: Rule by Parliament

After the king's execution, England was declared a "Commonwealth." This meant it was a republic, governed by Parliament. The House of Lords (a part of Parliament made up of nobles) was abolished. The country was supposed to be run for the good of all its people. However, this new government faced many challenges. There were still conflicts in Ireland and Scotland, and many people disagreed about how the country should be run.

The Protectorate: Oliver Cromwell Takes Charge

By 1653, Oliver Cromwell, a very successful general from the Civil War, felt that Parliament was not doing a good job. He used his army to dismiss Parliament. Soon after, he became the "Lord Protector" of England, Scotland, and Ireland. This made him the most powerful person in the country, almost like a king, but without the title. Cromwell tried to bring stability and order. He introduced new laws and tried to make society more religious.

Richard Cromwell's Short Rule

When Oliver Cromwell died in 1658, his son, Richard Cromwell, took over as Lord Protector. However, Richard was not as strong a leader as his father. He struggled to control the army and Parliament. People began to feel that the country needed a king again to bring lasting peace.

The King Returns

After just a few months, Richard Cromwell stepped down. The country went back to being a Commonwealth for a short time. But it was clear that many people wanted the old system back. In 1660, King Charles II, the son of the executed King Charles I, was invited to return to England. This event is known as the Restoration. It marked the end of the Commonwealth and Protectorate and the return of the monarchy.
