Compiègne is a historic city in France. It is located in the Oise department, which is part of the Picardy region. Compiègne is also a "sub-prefecture," meaning it's an important administrative center for its area.
The city's story began a very long time ago, even back in Roman times. At that time, there was an important place where people could cross the Oise River. The Romans called this river "Isara." Archeologists have found old Roman houses, called villae, near where Compiègne is today.
