Comyn is a small, unincorporated community in Comanche County, Texas, in the United States. An unincorporated community means it is a settlement that is not officially organized as a city or town. In 2000, about 40 people lived there.

History of Comyn

Comyn started around 1875. It was first called "Theney" after W. F. Matheney, who owned a trading post there. A trading post was like a general store where people could buy and sell goods.

The community's name changed to "Comyn" around 1881. This happened when the Texas Central Railroad was built through the area. M. T. Comyn was the foreman, or leader, of the construction crew. A train depot, which is like a small train station, was also opened.

A post office was set up in Comyn in 1909. It stayed open until the late 1950s. The community also had a lumberyard, a blacksmith shop, a cotton gin, and several stores. A cotton gin is a machine that separates cotton fibers from their seeds.

In 1918, the Humble Pipeline Company built a pipeline to connect Comyn with its terminal at Webster. A large tank farm, which is a place with many storage tanks, was built in Comyn. Many people came to work, and a large tent city appeared. However, construction ended in 1919.

Later, the Humble Oil pipeline was extended. Comyn's growth slowed down as oil production decreased in West Texas. By 1980, most businesses had left. However, the oil company kept its office and pump station there.

In 1969, a historical marker was placed in Comyn. It tells how the area grew quickly after threats from Native American groups ended. One of the first families to settle nearby was B. F. Barnes's family in 1876. His great-grandson, Ben Barnes, who later became a Lieutenant Governor of Texas, grew up in Comyn.

Today, Comyn has a cemetery and many homes. The Golden Peanut Company is still operating there. You can see many large storage tanks along Farm to Market Road 1496 at the peanut plant. These tanks were once used by Humble Pipeline Company to store oil, but now they store peanuts. Comyn still has train service. The old Texas Central railroad line is now used by the Fort Worth and Western Railroad. It is even called the "Peanut Line" because of the peanut industry.

During World War II, a balloon from Japan was seen in Comyn. It was described as being about 30 feet (9 meters) high. It carried five metal canisters.
