History of ConCarolinas
ConCarolinas started because a group of people in Charlotte really wanted a big science fiction convention. They had experience from other conventions and decided to create their own. They chose a cool winged panther as their mascot!
ConCarolinas: The Beginning (2002)
The very first ConCarolinas was a two-day event in May 2002. It was a humble start, mostly featuring local writers and artists. The main focus was on games like RPGs and card games. It was a "teaser" for bigger things to come!
ConCarolinas Grows (2003)
In 2003, ConCarolinas became a full three-day convention. They had their first big-name writer, David Weber, as a special guest. The event expanded to include many more panels and even a showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Outdoor SCA events were also a big hit!
More Guests and Fun (2004-2006)
- 2004: Famous author Alan Dean Foster joined as a guest. David Weber also returned!
- 2005: This year was special because ConCarolinas welcomed media guests for the first time! Actors like Ken Foree (from Dawn of the Dead) and Kane Hodder (from Friday the 13th) met fans.
- 2006: The convention featured writer Spider Robinson and actor Tony Amendola from Stargate SG-1. There was also more filking, which is like folk music for sci-fi fans!
Exciting New Events (2007-2009)
- 2007: Guests included author Barbara Hambly and actor Bodie Olmos from Battlestar Galactica. A fun Pirate Ball was also held!
- 2008: Actors Gary Jones and Suzie Plakson attended. The convention added new topics like paranormal discussions and even a Zombie Walk!
- 2009: Author Katherine Kurtz was a special guest. This year, ConCarolinas moved to a new, bigger hotel: the Hilton Charlotte University Place.
Hosting DeepSouthCon (2010)
In 2010, ConCarolinas had the honor of hosting DeepSouthCon, a major science fiction convention for the southern United States. They gave out special awards to famous author Jerry Pournelle and 501st Legion founder Albin Johnson.
ConCarolinas continues to be an annual event, bringing fans together every year for a weekend of science fiction, fantasy, and fun!
