Meet Concha Piquer, whose full name was María de la Concepción Piquer López. She was a very famous Spanish singer and actress. Concha was born in Valencia, Spain, on December 13, 1906. She passed away in Madrid on December 12, 1990.
Concha Piquer was especially known for singing a type of Spanish folk music called copla. She became one of the most successful female copla singers of her time. Many of her popular songs were written by famous songwriters like Salvador Valverde, and the team of Quintero, León and Quiroga. Her song Ojos verdes (which means Green Eyes) was very famous.
Concha Piquer's Life Story
In September 1922, Concha Piquer started her career in New York City. She performed in an opera called The Wild Cat by Manuel Penella. She lived in the United States for a while, acting in Broadway theaters and even in movies.
Several years later, Concha Piquer returned to Spain. She stayed there for the rest of her life. One year after she came back, the Spanish Civil War began. During this time, some of her songs were partly censored. This meant that parts of her songs were not allowed to be heard by the public by the government at the time.
In 1958, during a concert in Isla Cristina, Andalusia, something unexpected happened. She briefly lost her singing voice for a moment. But Concha was a true professional and kept going with her performance! Five years later, in 1963, she decided to retire from singing.
Concha Piquer died in Madrid on December 12, 1990, just one day before her 84th birthday.
