Confederate settlements in British Honduras facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Confederate Settlements in British Honduras were groups of people from the Confederate States of America who moved to British Honduras (now Belize) during and after the American Civil War. These settlers were often called "Confederates" and were looking for a new home and a fresh start. They became a small, unique part of Belize's history and culture.

Why Confederates Moved to British Honduras

When the American Civil War began, leaders in British Honduras saw a chance to help their economy. They started selling weapons and supplies to the Confederate States, which made the colony more supportive of the Confederates.

The colonial governor and other officials also wanted to attract American Southerners who knew a lot about growing crops like cotton and sugar. They offered these Confederate immigrants special deals, including land at lower prices and tax breaks. Even though famous leaders like General Robert E. Lee advised Southerners not to leave for Central America, many ignored this advice. They hoped to create new farms and plantations in the English-speaking colony. Many of these Southerners had lost everything during the war and were seeking a new life.

Life in a New Land

More Confederates chose to move to British Honduras than any other place. One big reason was that it was an English-speaking colony, which made it easier for them to settle in. This is also why they didn't keep a separate cultural identity as much as those who went to places like Brazil.

Many Confederates tried to grow cotton, but they faced big challenges. The climate was difficult, and there were many insects that damaged their crops. Despite their efforts, it was hard to succeed with farming in this new environment.

Some well-known Confederates who moved to British Honduras included Colin J. McRae, who had been a financial agent for the Confederacy in Europe, and Joseph Benjamin, whose brother was the Confederate Secretary of War, Judah P. Benjamin.

Learning More About the Settlements

In 2001, historian and author Donald C. Simmons, Jr. wrote a book called Confederate Settlements in British Honduras. This book shares the story of this interesting time in both American and British Honduran history.
