What Does It Look Like?

The Congaturi halfbeak has a very special shape. It has a long lower jaw, like a beak. Its body is long and round, like a cylinder. This fish does not have any sharp spines on its fins. However, it does have soft rays. It has 13 to 16 rays on its dorsal fin (top fin). It also has 13 to 16 rays on its anal fin (bottom fin).

The longest Congaturi halfbeak ever found was about 35 centimeters (14 inches) long. But most of these fish are usually around 13 centimeters (5 inches) long. Their tail fin has a slightly notched shape.

Their body color is green on top. They have a shiny silver stripe along their side. This stripe gets wider towards the back. Their belly is white. The tip of their "beak" is a reddish color.

Where Does It Live?

The Congaturi halfbeak lives in warm, tropical waters. You can find it in the Indo-Pacific oceans. Its home stretches from western India and around Sri Lanka. It also lives near China and the Philippines.

This fish can also be found in freshwater. It lives in rivers and lakes in Cambodia. You can also find it in the Mekong river in China. The Congaturi halfbeak likes to stay near the surface of the water. It is often found in estuaries (where rivers meet the sea) and lagoons.
