UConn Huskies History
Why "Huskies"?
The University of Connecticut's teams are called the "Huskies." This name was chosen in 1934 after students voted for it. Before that, the teams were known as the "Aggies." The name "Huskies" was picked when the school changed its name from Connecticut Agricultural College to Connecticut State College.
The name "UConn" became official in 2013. It sounds a bit like "Yukon," where real Huskies come from!
Joining the Big Conferences
UConn teams compete in the NCAA's Division I. Most of their sports are in the Big East Conference. However, the football and ice hockey teams play in different conferences.
The Huskies helped start the original Big East Conference in 1979. They left for a while to join the American Athletic Conference in 2013. But in 2020, UConn came back to the "new" Big East Conference. This reunited them with many old rivals. The football team now plays as an independent team, meaning they are not part of a conference.
