Conowingo Creek facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Conowingo Creek is a stream about 20.2-mile-long (32.5 km) (that's about 32.5 kilometers) in Pennsylvania and Maryland. It's like a smaller river that flows into a bigger one, the Susquehanna River.

The name "Conowingo" comes from the Lenape people, who were Native Americans. It means "at the rapids," which tells us there might have been fast-moving water in the creek!

Where Conowingo Creek Starts and Flows

Conowingo Creek begins its journey in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. It starts near the northern edge of a place called East Drumore Township.

Journey Through Pennsylvania

As the creek flows south, it meets another small stream called Jackson Run. It then enters Fulton Township. This township is named after Robert Fulton, who was famous for inventing the steamboat! The creek flows right past where he was born.

The creek continues along the east side of a town called Wakefield. Below Wakefield, it meets another stream, the Little Conowingo Creek. After this, the land around the creek starts to get hillier.

Entering Maryland and Joining the Susquehanna

Soon, Conowingo Creek crosses the border into Cecil County, Maryland. Its valley gets deeper and turns into a gorge, which is like a small canyon, as it gets closer to the Susquehanna River.

Finally, Conowingo Creek empties into the Conowingo Reservoir. This reservoir is a large lake created by the Conowingo Dam on the Susquehanna River. The creek joins the reservoir at a spot called Pilot Station.
