Conrad Davis Totman, born on January 5, 1934, is an American historian. He is known for studying the environment and Japan. He also worked as a translator. He used to be a professor at Yale University.

Early Life and Education

Conrad Totman was born in Conway, Massachusetts. He went to Harvard University for his college studies. In 1964, he earned a special degree there. This degree was in the history of East Asia.

He joined the army in 1953. He served in South Korea in 1954. This was right after the Korean War ended.

Teaching Career

Mr. Totman taught Japanese history for many years. He taught at several universities. These included the University of California at Santa Barbara, Northwestern University, and Yale. He stopped teaching at Yale in 1997.
