Conrich is a small hamlet located in southern Alberta, Canada. A hamlet is a very small community, often smaller than a village. Conrich is managed by Rocky View County.
Where is Conrich Located?
Conrich is found about 3.2 kilometers (2 miles) east of Calgary's city limits. It is also about 14 kilometers (9 miles) northeast of Downtown Calgary. There have been talks that Conrich might one day become part of Calgary. However, Calgary's city limits did not move closer to Conrich in 2007.
The History of Conrich
Conrich began as a "flag station" for the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. A flag station was a special kind of train stop. Passengers who wanted to get on the train had to wave a flag to signal it to stop. The railway line reached Conrich in 1913. The name "Conrich" comes from the last names of two real estate developers: Mr. Connacher and Mr. Richardson.
The Canadian National Railway took over the train line in 1918. In the same year, a large building called a grain elevator was built. This elevator could hold 30,000 bushels of grain. Conrich also had its own post office. It was open from August 15, 1925, until December 12, 1960.
Conrich's Population
In the 2021 Census, 15 people lived in Conrich. They lived in 7 homes. This was a small change from its population of 20 people in 2016. Conrich is a very small area, covering only 0.18 square kilometers (about 0.07 square miles).
A local count in 2018 showed that 21 people lived in Conrich. This was a decrease from 26 people in 2013. These numbers show that Conrich remains a very small community.
