Constantine Joseph Smyth (born December 4, 1859 – died April 14, 1924) was an important judge in the United States. He served as the Chief Justice of the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. This court helps decide if laws are being followed correctly.
Early Life and Career
Constantine Joseph Smyth was born in County Cavan, Ireland, on December 4, 1859. He moved to the United States and became a lawyer. In 1885, he finished his law studies. He then started his own law practice in Omaha, Nebraska. He worked there from 1885 to 1913.
Smyth was also involved in politics and public service. In 1887, he became a member of the Nebraska House of Representatives. This group helps make laws for the state of Nebraska. From 1889 to 1894, he served on the Omaha School Board. This board helps manage the city's schools.
He also led the Nebraska State Democratic Committee. He was the chairman from 1894 to 1896. From 1897 to 1900, he was the Attorney General of Nebraska. The Attorney General is the state's top lawyer. They represent the state in legal matters.
Smyth also taught law at Creighton University School of Law. He was an associate dean and professor there from 1905 to 1910. In 1907, he earned a Master of Arts degree from Creighton University. Before becoming a judge, he worked for the Attorney General of the United States. He was a special assistant from 1913 to 1917.
Becoming a Federal Judge
On June 29, 1917, President Woodrow Wilson chose Constantine Joseph Smyth for a big job. He nominated him to be the Chief Justice of the Court of Appeals of the District of Columbia. This court is now known as the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. It is a very important court in the U.S. legal system.
The United States Senate approved his nomination on July 12, 1917. He officially started his new role as Chief Justice on the same day. He served as Chief Justice until April 14, 1924, when he passed away.
