Constitutionalism facts for kids

Constitutionalism is a way of thinking about and running a government. It's all about making sure that those in power, like leaders and officials, don't become tyrants. It also works to protect the liberty (freedom) and rights of every person.

Simply put, constitutionalism means that politics and government actions must follow a constitution. A constitution is like a rulebook for a country.

What is Limited Government?

Since the 1700s, a key part of modern constitutionalism is the idea of limited government. This means that government officials cannot just do whatever they want. They must follow rules when they make decisions and enforce laws.

The Constitution is the highest law in the land. It guides and limits how government officials use their power. This stops them from acting unfairly or without reason.

The United States Example

In 1787, leaders in the United States wrote and approved their Constitution. Article 6 of the U.S. Constitution says that the Constitution and the laws made under it are the "supreme Law of the Land."

This means all laws, whether made by Congress or state governments, must follow the Constitution. Alexander Hamilton, an important early American leader, explained this. He said that "No legislative act contrary to the Constitution... can be valid."

If a law or action by the government goes against the Constitution, the Supreme Court can declare it unconstitutional. This means it is unlawful and cannot be used.

Constitutional Monarchy

A constitutional monarchy is a type of government that is between two other forms:

• Absolutism: Here, a king or queen has total power. There is no way to control them.
• Parliamentary republic: This is a government without a king or queen. The people elect their leaders.

In a constitutional monarchy, a king or queen is still the head of state. However, their power is limited by a constitution. They cannot rule however they wish. Many countries today, like the United Kingdom, are constitutional monarchies.
