Contact is a small, undeveloped community in Elko County, Nevada, United States. It is located in an area with many valuable minerals. Because of these minerals, there are several mines nearby.
History of Contact
A post office was opened in Contact in 1897. It served the community for many years, closing down in 1962. The name "Contact" comes from a term used in mining. It refers to where two different types of rock meet, often a good place to find minerals.
In 1915, Contact was a busier place. It had a hotel where people could stay and a restaurant to eat. The community even had its own local newspaper. In 1930, a new town area was planned. However, by then, the community was already starting to shrink. A big fire in 1942 caused a lot of damage. This fire turned Contact into what is almost a ghost town. Today, one of the main buildings in Contact is a maintenance station. This station is run by the Nevada Department of Transportation.
Contact and Jackpot

Before Jackpot was founded in 1954, Contact was known as the closest Nevada settlement to the Idaho border. Early records for a famous place called Cactus Pete's show it was first located in Contact. This was before Jackpot became its own separate community.
