Contradiction facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A contradiction happens when you have two or more ideas or statements that just can't both be true at the same time. Think of it like trying to say "it's raining" and "it's not raining" at the exact same moment in the same place – both can't be true! In logic, a contradiction means something that goes against itself.

What is a Contradiction?

A contradiction is a situation where two things are said, but they can't both be real or true at the same time. If one statement is true, the other must be false, and vice-versa. They completely disagree with each other.

The Chinese Story of the Spear and Shield

There's a famous story from ancient China that helps explain contradictions. It's about a merchant who sold weapons.

He would boast about his spears, saying, "My spears are so incredibly sharp, they can break through any shield!"

Then, he would boast about his shields, saying, "My shields are so incredibly strong, they can block any spear!"

Someone in the crowd asked him, "What would happen if you tried to use your 'unbreakable' spear against your 'unblockable' shield?"

The merchant couldn't answer! This is because his two statements created a contradiction. If the spear could break any shield, then it must be able to break his own shield. But if his shield could block any spear, then it must be able to block his own spear. Both statements cannot be true at the same time.

Because of this story, the word for contradiction in Chinese is máodùn (矛盾), which literally means "spear and shield."

Contradictions in Logic

In logic, which is the study of correct reasoning, a contradiction is very important. The ancient Greek thinker Aristotle taught that two statements that contradict each other cannot both be true.

For example, if you say "The sky is blue" and "The sky is not blue" at the same time, you have a contradiction. Only one of those statements can be true. They are "mutually exclusive," meaning they push each other out – if one is in, the other is out.

Contradictions are often used in arguments or debates to show that someone's idea or statement doesn't make sense. If you can show that an idea leads to a contradiction, it means the idea itself might be wrong.
