What's in a Name?
Yanarraju: The Black Mountain
The name Yanarraju might come from two Quechua words. Yana means "black," and rahu means "snow," "ice," or a "mountain with snow." So, Yanarraju could mean "black snowy mountain."
Ruricocha: The Inner Lake
The name Ruricocha also has Quechua roots. Ruri can mean "inside," "interior," "deep," or even "valley" or "little river." Qucha means "lake." So, Ruricocha might refer to a "lake inside" or a "deep lake."
Where is Contrahierbas Located?
Contrahierbas is found in the Ancash Region of Peru. It is located where three provinces meet: Asunción, Carhuaz, and Yungay.
This giant mountain is part of the beautiful Huascarán National Park. The park is famous for its stunning snowy peaks and clear blue lakes. Contrahierbas is situated northeast of another mountain called Hualcán.
