Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Klosterzeven Agreement was an important deal signed on 10 September 1757. It happened in a town called Klosterzeven in Germany. This agreement was made between France and Hanover during the Seven Years' War.

Hanover was a German state that had a special link to the King of Great Britain, King George II. The agreement meant that Hanover would leave the war and French soldiers would take over some parts of its land. This happened after Hanover lost badly in a battle called the Battle of Hastenbeck on 26 July. After that defeat, Hanover's army had to retreat north until it reached Stade.

What Was the Klosterzeven Agreement?

The Klosterzeven Agreement was a formal document. It was signed to stop the fighting between France and Hanover. This agreement was a big deal because it changed who was fighting in the Seven Years' War. The Seven Years' War was a huge global conflict that involved many powerful countries.

Why Was It Signed?

Hanover signed the agreement because its army, known as the Army of Observation, had suffered a major defeat. This loss at the Battle of Hastenbeck left Hanover in a very weak position. The French army was strong and advancing. Signing the agreement seemed like the only way to protect Hanover from further damage and occupation.

The Agreement's Impact

The Klosterzeven Agreement was not popular with Hanover's friends, especially Prussia. Prussia was a powerful German kingdom and an ally of Hanover. The agreement meant that Prussia's western border was now less protected. This made Prussia's king, Frederick the Great, very unhappy.

The agreement also caused problems for the Duke of Cumberland. He was a British prince and the commander of the Hanoverian army. He signed the agreement for Hanover. When he returned to Britain, he was no longer respected. This ended his military career, which had been quite successful before.

What Happened Next?

Things changed after Prussia won a big battle called the Battle of Rossbach on 5 November 1757. This victory encouraged King George II to cancel the Klosterzeven Agreement. Both Frederick the Great and a powerful British politician named William Pitt pushed for this.

So, the agreement was officially cancelled. Hanover then rejoined the war the next year. The Duke of Cumberland was replaced as commander by Duke Ferdinand of Brunswick, who took charge of the army.
