The Conway River is a cool river in the South Island of New Zealand. It helps mark the border between two important areas: Canterbury and Marlborough.

Where Does the Conway River Flow?

The Conway River starts high up in the Amuri Range. It flows for about 30 kilometres (19 mi) (that's about 19 miles). The river first moves south-east through the Hundalee Hills. These hills are at the southern end of the Seaward Kaikoura Mountains.

After that, the river turns and flows north-east. It eventually reaches the big Pacific Ocean. This meeting point is about 30 kilometres (or 19 miles) south of the town of Kaikōura. The Charwell River is a smaller river that flows into the Conway River. It is called a tributary.

How Did the Conway River Get Its Name?

The Conway River likely got its name from a river in North Wales. This river is called the River Conwy.

A man named Thomas Hanmer owned a farm called Hawkeswood Station. This farm was near the Conway River in the 1850s. Thomas Hanmer was originally from North Wales. It is thought that he named the river after the one from his home country.
