Hundalee Hills facts for kids
The Hundalee Hills are a cool group of hills in the South Island of New Zealand. They are found near the edges of the Hurunui District and Kaikoura District in the Canterbury area.
These hills are about 40 kilometres (25 miles) south of Kaikōura. The Hundalee Hills are mostly known for a tricky part of State Highway 1. This road connects Kaikōura to Christchurch.
Exploring the Hundalee Hills
The road through the Hundalee Hills is very winding. It twists sharply around the sides of the hills. The Conway River also follows a similar path. This river flows into the Pacific Ocean near the Hundalee Hills.
The Hundalee Locality
Inside the Hundalee Hills, there is a small rural area called Hundalee. This place was once a temporary end point for the Main North Line railway. This railway line also travels through the Hundalee Hills.
Famous Resident: Charles Upham
Hundalee was also the home of a very brave person named Charles Upham. He was a hero from World War II. After he finished his time in combat, he lived in Hundalee.
