Conyers Darcy, 2nd Earl of Holderness

Conyers Darcy, the 2nd Earl of Holderness (born in 1622, died in 1692), was an important English politician. He served in the House of Commons, which is like one part of the government, from 1660 to 1679. Later, he became a peer, meaning he joined the House of Lords, another part of the government.

Conyers Darcy's Life and Career

Early Years and Education

Conyers Darcy was born in 1622. His father was also named Conyers Darcy, who later became the 1st Earl of Holderness. Young Conyers went to University College, Oxford in 1637 to study. Later, in 1640, he also studied at Gray's Inn, which is a place where people learn to become lawyers.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

In 1660, Conyers Darcy was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for a place called Boroughbridge. An MP is a person elected to represent an area in the government. This happened during a special meeting of Parliament called the Convention Parliament.

The next year, in 1661, he was elected again. This time, he represented the larger area of Yorkshire in what was known as the Cavalier Parliament. He served as an MP for many years.

Joining the House of Lords

In November 1680, Conyers Darcy moved to the House of Lords. This is the upper house of the UK Parliament, where members are not elected by the public. He was given the title Baron Conyers.

When his father became an Earl in 1682, Conyers Darcy received a special title called Lord Darcy de Knayth. This was a courtesy title, meaning it was used out of respect while his father was still alive. When his father passed away on June 14, 1689, Conyers Darcy officially became the 2nd Earl of Holderness. He also inherited the titles of 9th Baron Darcy de Knayth and 6th Baron Conyers.

Family and Succession

Conyers Darcy was married four times during his life. His second marriage, on February 8, 1650, was to Lady Frances Howard.

His oldest son and the person expected to inherit his titles was John Darcy, Lord Conyers. John was born around 1659 from Conyers's marriage to Frances Howard. John Darcy married a woman named Bridget.

However, John Darcy sadly passed away in 1689, before his father did. Because of this, when Conyers Darcy, the 2nd Earl of Holderness, died in 1692, the earldom went to his grandson. This was Robert Darcy, 3rd Earl of Holderness (1681–1722), who was John's second but oldest living son.
