Cook's Ferry Indian Band facts for kids
The Cook's Ferry First Nation is an Indigenous government in British Columbia, Canada. They are part of the Nlaka'pamux people. The Nlaka'pamux are a large group of Indigenous communities. The Cook's Ferry First Nation is located in the central part of British Columbia.
Their main community and offices are near Spences Bridge. This is a small town on the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1). It is found in the Thompson Canyon. This area is between Lytton and Cache Creek. The Nicola River also joins the Thompson River here.
The Cook's Ferry First Nation used to be part of the Scw'exmx Tribal Council. This council helps different Nlaka'pamux communities work together. However, the Cook's Ferry First Nation is no longer a member of this council. Other Nlaka'pamux governments are part of different groups. These include the Fraser Canyon Indian Administration or the Nlaka'pamux Nation Tribal Council. The Lytton First Nation is an exception, as it does not belong to any of these councils.
Lands of the Cook's Ferry First Nation
The Cook's Ferry First Nation has control over several special areas of land. These lands are called Indian Reserves. They are important for the community. These reserves are spread out in different locations. They include places near Spences Bridge and even one near Merritt.
In total, the Cook's Ferry First Nation manages about 3,960 hectares of land. A hectare is about the size of a sports field. On these lands, there are 46 homes where people live. Some reserves have many homes, while others have none. Each reserve has its own name and size.
