Lytton First Nation facts for kids
The Lytton First Nation (called ƛ̓q̓əmci̓n in their own language, Thompson: ƛ̓q̓əmci̓n) is a First Nations government located in Lytton, British Columbia. Lytton is in the Fraser Canyon area of British Columbia. This First Nation is the largest group among all the Nlaka'pamux bands. Unlike other Nlaka'pamux (Thompson) groups, the Lytton First Nation is not part of the three main Nlaka'pamux tribal councils. These councils are the Nicola Tribal Association, the Fraser Canyon Indian Administration, and the Nlaka'pamux Nation Tribal Council.

A Look at Lytton First Nation History
The Lytton First Nation played a very important role during the Fraser Canyon Gold Rush from 1858 to 1860. They were also key during the Fraser Canyon War in 1858. During this time, Lytton was known as Kumsheen.
Chief Spintlum and the Peace Treaties
Leaders of the gold miners from Yale met with the Nlaka'pamux chiefs in Kumsheen. Their goal was to talk about ending the war. Some chiefs wanted to fight the outsiders. However, the Kumsheen chief named Spintlum (also known as Cxpentlm or David Spintlum) strongly argued for peace.
Because of Chief Spintlum's efforts, six agreements were made. These were called the Snyder Treaties. Sadly, these treaties have been lost over time.
