Cookpad Inc. is a Japanese company that focuses on "food tech." This means they use technology to help people with cooking and food. Their main product is a huge online service called "Cookpad." It's a place where people can share and find recipes.
Cookpad is super popular in Japan, with millions of people using it every month. It's also growing around the world, with many users outside Japan. People can upload their own recipes or search through millions of recipes shared by others.
What is Cookpad?
Cookpad is like a giant online cookbook where everyone can add their favorite recipes. Imagine a place where you can find almost any recipe you want, from simple snacks to fancy meals. It's all created and shared by people just like you!
How it Works
- Share Recipes: If you invent a yummy dish, you can write down the steps and ingredients and share it on Cookpad.
- Find Recipes: Looking for something new to cook? You can search for recipes based on ingredients you have, what kind of food you like, or how much time you have.
- Connect with Foodies: It's a community where people who love cooking can connect and get ideas from each other.
Cookpad is used by around 60 million people in Japan each month. Globally, about 40 million people use it monthly. As of December 2018, there were more than 5 million recipes registered on Cookpad.
Cookpad's Journey
Cookpad started a long time ago, in 1997, under a different name, Coin Ltd. It was created to be a place for people to share cooking ideas.
Early Days
- 1998: The service launched as "Kitchen@coin."
- 1999: The name changed to "COOKPAD," which is what we know it as today.
- 2002: Cookpad started showing advertisements on its website.
- 2004: They launched a "premium service" for users who wanted extra features.
- 2006: A mobile version called "MOBAREPI" was introduced, making it easy to find recipes on phones.
Going Global
In July 2009, Cookpad became a public company. This means its shares can be bought and sold on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. After this, Cookpad started to expand around the world.
- 2010: An office opened in California, USA.
- 2011: Another office opened in Singapore.
- 2016: Cookpad bought another company called Cucumbertown, which also focused on recipes.
- 2017: Cookpad set up its global headquarters in Bristol, UK.
Today, Cookpad has offices in many countries, including Spain, Indonesia, Lebanon, Brazil, India, Taiwan, Hungary, Greece, and Russia. This helps them reach more people who love to cook all over the world.
