About the Cooloola Sedge Frog
What Does It Look Like?
These frogs are quite small, only about 3 cm long. They are usually green and brown, often with brown spots. Some Cooloola sedge frogs even have cool stripes that go all the way to their eyes! Their eyes are special because their pupils (the black part) are sideways and can open up and down. They have a little bit of webbing on their front feet and more webbing on their back feet, which helps them swim.
Where Does It Live?
Cooloola sedge frogs love to live near the ocean. They make their homes in lakes and streams. They especially like places where there are lots of reeds, which are tall grass-like plants that grow in water. These reeds give them good places to hide and lay their eggs.
Life Cycle of the Frog
When it's time to lay eggs, these frogs choose plants that are underwater. The tadpoles that hatch from these eggs are gold with brown spots. They can grow to be quite big for tadpoles, reaching up to 5.5 cm long before they turn into frogs.
Why Is It Endangered?
Sadly, the Cooloola sedge frog is an endangered species. This means there aren't many of them left, and they are at risk of disappearing forever. This is happening for a few reasons:
- Habitat Loss: People are building more and more things in the places where these frogs live. This takes away their homes.
- Human Visitors: When people visit the lakes where these frogs like to lay their eggs, it can disturb the frogs and their young.
- Water Use: Humans also use a lot of water from the lakes and streams where these frogs live. This can make their homes dry up.
It's important to protect these special frogs and their watery homes!
