Understanding Coopertown's History
Coopertown has a rich past, starting long before it became a town.
Early Native American Lands
Hundreds of years ago, the land that is now Coopertown was important hunting grounds. Both the Cherokee and Chickasaw tribes claimed this area. In 1775, a man named Richard Henderson bought a large piece of land from the Cherokee. He hoped to create a new colony called Transylvania. This colony was never officially recognized.
Settlement and Naming the Town
In the late 1700s and early 1800s, settlers began to move into the area. David Naive settled here in 1825. For a while, the community was known as Naive's Crossroads.
Later, the area became known for making barrels and whiskey. People who made barrels were called "coopers." There were several cooper shops in the community. These shops made barrels for mills along the nearby Red River. Because of these coopers, the community eventually got its name: Coopertown.
Becoming an Official Town
Coopertown officially became a town in 1996. The people living there decided to do this. They wanted to have more control over their community. This decision came after a plan to build a landfill in the area.
In 2005, Coopertown Middle School opened for students in grades 6 to 8. A few years later, grades 4 and 5 also moved to the middle school.
