Coopey Falls facts for kids
Coopey Falls is a beautiful waterfall located in the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon, USA. It's found along the Historic Columbia River Highway in Multnomah County. This waterfall is known as a horsetail waterfall. This means the water drops mostly straight down, but it stays in contact with the rock behind it, looking a bit like a horse's tail. Coopey Falls drops about 150 feet (46 m)!
How Coopey Falls Got Its Name
Coopey Falls is named after a man named Charles Coopey. He used to own the land right next to the waterfall. Charles Coopey was an English tailor. He had a big idea to use the water from a nearby waterfall, Wahkeena Falls, to power a factory. This factory would have been a woolen mill. He wanted to spin wool into thread and weave it into cloth there.
A famous person named Simon Benson bought Wahkeena Falls from Charles Coopey. This helped protect the waterfall for everyone to enjoy.
Visiting Coopey Falls
Coopey Falls is on private land. This land belongs to a group of nuns called the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist. They have a special building called a convent there.
The sisters are very kind. They often let visitors see the falls. You can follow a path from the parking lot in front of their convent. It's a good idea to ask for their permission first.
You can also catch a glimpse of Coopey Falls from another spot. This is near the Angels' Rest trailhead. This trailhead is about half a mile west of the convent. The falls are also located about one mile (1.6 km) east of another famous waterfall, Bridal Veil Falls.
