Copley is a small village in County Durham, England. About 400 people live there. It's located in a countryside area, not far from the beautiful North Pennines. Copley is about 9 miles west of Bishop Auckland and 6 miles from Barnard Castle. Near the River Gaunless, you can still see an old chimney and some buildings from the historic Gaunless Valley Lead Mill.
Copley's Weather
Copley has its own special weather station. This station is run by the Met Office and the Environment Agency. Because Copley is high up (about 1,000 feet above sea level) and in the north-east of England, it's often one of the coldest places in the country.
Cold and Snowy
You might notice lots of ground frosts and snowfalls in Copley. In fact, Copley is the snowiest Met Office site in England! It's also the 5th snowiest place in the whole UK. On average, snow falls in Copley about 53 days each year.
Pennine Lee Wave
Even though it's cold, Copley is quite dry and sunny. This is because it's in a "rain-shadow" area. The higher Pennine hills to the west block much of the rain. These same hills can also create a strong, gusty wind called the Pennine Lee Wave. This wind can appear and disappear very quickly.
Village Life
Copley has a village hall. This hall is part of the Teesdale Village Halls' Consortium. It's a place where people in the village can meet and hold events. You won't find any shops or pubs directly in Copley village.
