Copperfield, California facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Copperfield was once a small settlement in Inyo County, California. It was located in a very remote and rugged area, about halfway between two other places called Greenwater and Furnace. This area is near the Funeral Mountains and is part of the famous Death Valley.

What Was Copperfield?

Copperfield was a short-lived mining camp that popped up during a time when people were searching for valuable minerals in the desert. It was mainly focused on mining copper, which is a metal used for many things, like electrical wires and pipes. These mining camps were often built quickly when a new discovery was made, hoping to strike it rich.

Where Was Copperfield Located?

This former settlement was deep within the Mojave Desert, in a very hot and dry place known as Death Valley. Imagine a vast, empty landscape with tall mountains and very little water. Copperfield was nestled in this challenging environment, close to the Funeral Mountains. It was situated between Greenwater and Furnace, which were also mining-related spots in the early 1900s. The location was incredibly isolated, making life there very tough for the miners and their families.

A Short-Lived Mining Town

Like many mining camps in the American West, Copperfield didn't last very long. It was a "boom-and-bust" town. This means it grew quickly when copper was found, attracting miners and businesses. But once the valuable minerals ran out, or if mining became too difficult or expensive, people would leave just as fast as they arrived. Copperfield was active for only a short period in the early 1900s before it became a ghost town, leaving behind only traces of its past. Today, there isn't much left of Copperfield, serving as a reminder of California's mining history.
