History of the Club
The Coras football club began on July 19, 1959. It was founded by Francisco Mengibar Bueno. The team quickly joined the Segunda División de México, which was Mexico's second division at the time. For many years, from the 1960s to the 1980s, the club mostly played in Mexico's lower football divisions. In 1986, they got a special invitation to play in the Copa de Oro de Occidente. This was a tournament with both first and second division clubs from the central-western part of the country.
In 1994, Coras was invited to play in the very first tournament of the new Primera A league. This league was a step up for the club. However, they had a tough time in their first year. After the 1995–96 season, they were moved back down to the Segunda División de México. In 2002, the club had a big win! They won the Apertura 2002 tournament in the Segunda División de México.
Since then, the club has played on and off in different leagues. They even built a new stadium to try and rejoin the Ascenso MX for the Apertura 2012 tournament. They also played against a team called the Austin Posse in 2004.
In June 2017, the club's owner, Jose Luis Higuera, announced that Coras would no longer exist. This happened after he bought a new club, Club Atlético Zacatepec. Coras then disappeared for about a month.
But the story didn't end there! In July 2017, the people running the Cuervos de Ensenada club decided to move their team to Tepic. They renamed it Deportivo Tepic JAP. However, this new team faced many money and management problems. Because of these issues, it also stopped playing in May 2018.
Before the 2018-19 season, a new team was created called Coras de Nayarit F.C. This new club came about when some local business people and the state government bought the license of Acatlán F.C.. Acatlán F.C. had won the Third Division in the 2017-18 season. But they couldn't move up to Serie A because they didn't meet all the rules. In June 2020, this team had to pause playing. This was due to money problems caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. So, they didn't play in the 2020-21 season.
In July 2021, the team started playing again in Serie A. But the club's management changed, and they were renamed Coras F.C. They also created a second team to play in the Liga TDP, which is a league for younger players and reserves.
On June 28, 2023, the main Liga Premier team moved to Piedras Negras, Coahuila. They kept the original name for a while. The Liga TDP team, however, stayed in Tepic. The club explained that the stadiums in Tepic, like the Estadio Nicolás Álvarez Ortega and the Estadio Olímpico Santa Teresita, were not in good condition for them to play there.
Stadiums Where They Play
Since 2023, Coras F.C. plays its home games at the Estadio Sección 123. This stadium is in Piedras Negras, Coahuila. It can hold up to 6,000 people.
Before that, between 2021 and 2023, Coras Fútbol Club played their home matches at the Estadio Olímpico Santa Teresita. This stadium is in Tepic, Nayarit. It can hold 4,000 people and has natural grass. The state of Nayarit owns it, and it opened in 2014.
Sometimes, the team also played games at the Estadio Nicolás Álvarez Ortega, also in Tepic, Nayarit. This stadium is much bigger, with space for 12,271 people. It also has natural grass and is owned by Nayarit. It opened in 2011 and was the club's main stadium until 2020. However, in 2021, they decided to stop using it because it was too far from the main part of Tepic.
