Tepic (Spanish pronunciation: [teˈpik]) is the capital and largest city in the western Mexican state of Nayarit. It is also the main city of the Tepic Municipality.

Tepic is located in the central part of Nayarit. It sits about 915 meters (3,002 feet) above sea level. The city is built on the banks of the Río Mololoa and the Río Tepic rivers. It is about 225 kilometers (140 miles) north-west of Guadalajara, Jalisco. Nearby, you can find the volcanoes of San Juan, Las Navajas, and Sangangüey. Tepic is a key city for the region's farming. Important crops grown here include sugarcane, tobacco, and citrus fruits.

The city was founded in 1531. It was first called Villa del Espíritu Santo de la Mayor España.

Indigenous Communities

Tepic has the second-largest group of indigenous people in the state of Nayarit. There are 4,375 indigenous people living here. The biggest groups are the Huichol or Wixárika (3,276 people), Cora (527 people), and Purépecha (101 people).

Catholicism is the main religion in Tepic. About 94.2% of the people follow this faith. The city's main church is the Catedral de la Purísima Concepción. It is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. This cathedral is the main church for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tepic.

Famous People from Tepic

  • Juan Escutia: He was a brave "Boy Hero" during the Battle of Chapultepec. Juan Escutia was born in Tepic between 1828 and 1832. On September 13, 1847, he fought against U.S. forces trying to take Chapultepec Castle in Mexico City. It is said that he wrapped himself in the Mexican flag and jumped to his death to protect it.
  • Amado Nervo: A well-known poet and diplomat.
  • Antonio Rivas Mercado: An important architect.
  • Emilia Ortiz: A modern painter, cartoonist, and poet. A major art center in downtown Tepic is named after her.
  • Gustavo Ayón: A professional basketball player who played in the NBA.

Sports and Activities

Tepic has many places for sports. There were once stadiums for football (soccer) and baseball. New, bigger stadiums are planned for the future. The state also has three private sports clubs.

You can find many football fields and places to play "cascaritas" (pickup games). There are also indoor football courts, a basketball center with a wooden floor, and several volleyball courts. The city also has a bowling alley. In the main park, there is an Olympic-sized swimming pool and a squash court.

Tennis is a popular sport in Tepic. However, the most popular sport is football (soccer). Futsal (indoor soccer) is also commonly played. Like many Mexican cities, Tepic has a bullring. Tepic has several state teams for different sports. Both the football and basketball teams are called "Coras."

Tepic has a humid subtropical climate. This means it has hot, humid summers and mild winters. Most of the rain falls during the wet season, which is from April to November, and sometimes in December.
