Corazón Volcano

Corazón is a very old volcano that is no longer active. It has been shaped by wind and weather over many, many years. Its name, "Corazón," comes from its shape, which some people think looks like a heart.

Where is Corazón Located?

This interesting volcano stands in the country of Ecuador, in South America. It's found on the western slopes of the Andes mountains. The Andes are the longest mountain range in the world! Corazón is not far from Ecuador's capital city, Quito.

What Kind of Volcano is Corazón?

Corazón is a type of volcano called a stratovolcano. Stratovolcanoes are also known as "composite volcanoes." They are tall, cone-shaped mountains built up over time by many layers of hardened lava, ash, and rocks. These volcanoes often have steep sides and a crater at the top. Corazón, however, is now very eroded, meaning it has been worn down by natural forces.

When Did Corazón Last Erupt?

Corazón is an inactive volcano, which means it is not expected to erupt again. Its last eruptions happened a very, very long time ago, during the Pleistocene age. The Pleistocene age was a period that ended about 11,700 years ago. So, it has been thousands of years since Corazón was active!

Who First Climbed Corazón?

The first known people to climb Corazón were two French explorers. Their names were Pierre Bouguer and Charles-Marie de La Condamine. They reached the top on July 20, 1738. They were part of a scientific mission to measure the shape of the Earth.
