Corbet Peak is a tall mountain peak in Antarctica. It stands about 4,822-metre-high (15,820 ft). This icy peak is found at the northern edge of the Vinson Plateau. It's part of the Sentinel Range, which is a mountain chain in the Ellsworth Mountains. Corbet Peak rises above Hinkley Glacier to its northeast and the start of Roché Glacier to its southwest.

How Corbet Peak Got Its Name

This peak was named in 2006 by a group called the US-ACAN. This stands for the United States Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names. They named it after Barry Corbet (1936-2004). Barry Corbet was a very important person in Antarctic exploration.

He was part of the American Antarctic Mountaineering Expedition in 1966–67. During this trip, his team achieved a huge feat. They were the first people to climb Mount Vinson. Mount Vinson is the highest mountain in all of Antarctica! Barry Corbet also helped climb other tall mountains in the Sentinel Range.

Where is Corbet Peak Located?

Corbet Peak is found at 78°31′31″S 85°32′50″W / 78.52528°S 85.54722°W / -78.52528; -85.54722. This means it's in a very cold and remote part of Antarctica. It is located about 0.97 miles (1.56 km) east of Mount Vinson. Maps of this area were first made in 1961 and then updated in 1988.
