Corbin is a fascinating ghost town located in Jefferson County, Montana, in the United States. It is an "unincorporated community," which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. You can find Corbin about 2 miles west of Jefferson City. It's easy to reach by taking Corbin Road from Interstate 15. Corbin is also considered part of the larger Helena area.
History of Corbin
Mining Boom Years
Corbin was a very important mining town in the 1890s. People came here hoping to find valuable minerals. The town had special equipment like a "stamp mill." This machine would crush rocks to get out the precious gold and silver. There was also a lot of other equipment to support the mining work.
The town grew quickly because of the rich mines nearby. The Alta Mine was especially important. It was a major silver mine that helped Corbin become a busy place. A post office was open in Corbin for many years, from 1887 until 1943. This shows that many people lived and worked there.
From Boom to Ghost Town
Today, the Alta Mine is no longer working. Corbin has become what we call a ghost town. This means most of the people have left. Even so, many of the old buildings from its mining days are still standing. Some of these historic structures have been carefully preserved. A few homes in Corbin are even lived in today.
While there is still some gold and silver mining happening in the wider area, Corbin itself is not as active as it once was. The town reached its peak of activity long ago and then slowly declined. It's a quiet place now, but it holds a lot of history from Montana's mining past.
