Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Cordua Bar was once a busy little mining town in Yuba County, California. It was also known as Cordua's Bar or Speck's Bar. This town was a part of the exciting California Gold Rush era.

Cordua Bar was located on the north side of the Yuba River. This river flows through the beautiful Sierra Nevada mountains. The town was found northwest of another old mining spot called Timbuctoo.

History of Cordua Bar

The California Gold Rush began in 1848 when gold was found at Sutter's Mill. This discovery brought thousands of people to California, all hoping to strike it rich. Many new towns, like Cordua Bar, popped up quickly wherever gold was found. These towns were often called "bars" because they were located on sandbars or gravel bars along rivers where gold collected.

How Cordua Bar Got Its Name

The town of Cordua Bar was named after a man named Theodore Cordua. He was a merchant during the Gold Rush. A merchant is someone who buys and sells goods. Theodore Cordua likely supplied miners with the tools and supplies they needed.

The name "Speck's Bar" was also used for the town. This name came from Jonas Spect. He was one of the people who first discovered gold along the Yuba River. Over time, "Spect's Bar" became "Speck's Bar" because of how people pronounced it. These names show us how important individuals were in the early days of the Gold Rush. They helped shape the places where miners lived and worked.
