Corey Antonio Hawkins (born October 22, 1988) is an American actor famous for his roles on TV, in movies, and on the stage. He became well-known for playing Heath in the TV series The Walking Dead. He also received praise for his role as the music legend Dr. Dre in the 2015 movie Straight Outta Compton.
Hawkins is also a star on Broadway. He has been nominated for the Tony Award, one of the highest honors in theater, for his acting in the plays Six Degrees of Separation and Topdog/Underdog.
You might also recognize him from the action series 24: Legacy or the monster movie Kong: Skull Island. He has worked with famous directors like Spike Lee in BlacKkKlansman and Joel Coen in The Tragedy of Macbeth. He also starred in the popular musical films In the Heights and The Color Purple.

Early Life and Schooling
Corey Hawkins was born in Washington, D.C.. His mother, who raised him, was a police officer. From a young age, Corey was interested in the arts. He went to the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, a special high school for students talented in music, dance, and drama.
After high school, he was accepted into the famous Juilliard School in New York City. Juilliard is one of the best acting schools in the world. While he was a student there, he won the John Houseman Award for his amazing talent in classical theater.
Acting Career
Starting Out
After graduating from Juilliard, Hawkins started his career in plays and on TV. He had a small part in the Marvel Studios movie Iron Man 3. Soon after, he acted alongside big stars like Liam Neeson and Julianne Moore in the action movie Non-Stop.
In 2013, Hawkins made his first appearance on a Broadway stage. He played the fiery character Tybalt in a new version of William Shakespeare's famous play, Romeo and Juliet.
Breakthrough Roles
2015 was a huge year for Corey Hawkins. He joined the cast of the popular TV show The Walking Dead as a character named Heath.
That same year, he landed the major role of Dr. Dre in Straight Outta Compton. The movie told the story of the groundbreaking rap group N.W.A. His performance was so good that he and the cast were nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award.
Becoming a Leading Man
By 2017, Hawkins was a star. He played the main character, Eric Carter, in the action-packed TV series 24: Legacy. He also appeared in the blockbuster movie Kong: Skull Island, where he shared the screen with giant monsters and actors like Samuel L. Jackson and Tom Hiddleston.
He returned to Broadway in the play Six Degrees of Separation and earned his first Tony Award nomination. He later received a second Tony nomination for the play Topdog/Underdog. His work has also been recognized with a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award.
