Cornell is a small, unincorporated community in Delta County, Michigan, United States. An "unincorporated community" means it is a place without its own local government. Instead, it is part of a larger area called Cornell Township.

History of Cornell

Cornell began as a settlement in 1886. Two people named Marcell Ashland and Edward Hollywood were among the first to settle there.

Founding the Community

The community was officially founded in 1887. This was done by George H. Mashek and Edward Arnold. George H. Mashek decided to name the new community "Cornell." He chose this name because it was the same as his old university, Cornell University.

Post Office Opens

A post office was opened in Cornell on April 12, 1899. Edward Arnold, one of the founders, became the very first postmaster. A postmaster is the person in charge of a post office.
