History of Cornellà
The story of Cornellà de Llobregat is shaped by three main things. First, it is very close to the city of Barcelona. Second, it was a common pathway for travelers. This was true for the whole Baix Llobregat region. Third, the Llobregat River runs right by it.
The name Cornellà comes from Roman times. It means "Cornelianus." The city's old buildings even show signs of Visigoth design.
The first time Cornellà was written about was in 980 AD. Back then, there was already a church and a defense tower. These were built to protect against invaders. The tower stood where the current castle is now. The castle was built much later, in the 1300s.
In the 1200s, Cornellà became part of Barcelona's land. For a short time, it was part of an area called "Franqueses del Llobregat." People there mostly worked in farming.
