The Cornufer heffernani, also known as the Solomon Island palm frog, is a type of frog. It belongs to the Ceratobatrachidae family. This frog lives only in the Solomon Islands. You can find it on islands like Buka and Bougainville Island in Papua New Guinea. It also lives on Choiseul and Santa Isabel Island in the Solomon Islands. The name heffernani honors Mr. N. S. Heffernan, who first collected these frogs.
About the Solomon Island Palm Frog
The Solomon Island palm frog has a small, thin body. It also has delicate legs. One frog specimen measured about 28 millimeters (just over 1 inch) long. Its head is wider than its body and shaped like a triangle. The frog has a rounded snout and large eyes.
Its skin is smooth on its back. But it feels bumpy on its sides, belly, and under its upper arms and thighs. These frogs are usually purplish-brown on top. Their underside is yellow. Over time, their colors might fade to yellowish all over.
Both the fingers and toes of this frog are webbed. They also have special discs that help them grip surfaces.
Where It Lives and Its Future
The Cornufer heffernani is a very rare frog. It lives in tropical rainforests. You can find it on low plants and trees. It can also live in forests that have grown back after being cut down.
This frog has a special way of reproducing. It does not have a tadpole stage. Instead, the eggs hatch directly into tiny frogs.
The biggest threat to this frog is habitat loss. This happens when forests are cut down for wood.
