Cornufer wolfi is a special type of frog that belongs to the family Ceratobatrachidae. It is found only in the Solomon Islands. You can find these frogs on Buka and Bougainville Island in Papua New Guinea. They also live on Santa Isabel and Choiseul Island in the Solomon Islands. This frog is also known as Wolf's sticky-toed frog. It was named after Eugen Wolf, who was part of an expedition long ago.
What Does Wolf's Sticky-Toed Frog Look Like?
Adult male Cornufer wolfi frogs are about 25 to 31 millimeters long. That's roughly 1 to 1.2 inches. Adult females are a bit larger, measuring about 28 to 32 millimeters long (1.1 to 1.3 inches).
Their fingertips are wide and flat, like small discs. This helps them stick to surfaces. Their toes also have smaller discs and tiny webs at their base. The back of the frog is usually a uniform olive green color. A dark, blackish band runs from the tip of their nose, through their eye, and past their ear drum (called the tympanum). The belly of the frog is creamy white. Some frogs are dark brown all over, including their bellies. Their eyes have a reddish color.
Where Does This Frog Live and How Is It Protected?
Cornufer wolfi lives in lowland and hill rainforests. They are found at elevations below 700 meters (about 2,300 feet). These frogs prefer to live in untouched, or "primary," forests. However, they can also be found at the edge of forests and even in wild banana plants.
This frog is an arboreal species, which means it lives in trees. It lays its eggs on leaves in trees, usually about two meters (about 6.5 feet) above the ground. A cool fact about these frogs is that their eggs develop directly into tiny froglets. This means they don't have a free-swimming tadpole stage like many other frogs.
The main threat to Cornufer wolfi is logging. This activity removes the forests where they live. Sadly, there are no protected areas where these frogs are known to live.
