He also served as a special doctor, known as Physician-Extraordinary, to William IV, who was the King of England at the time. His younger half-brother, Prescott Gardner Hewett, also became a very famous doctor later on.

Growing Up: Cornwallis Hewett's Early Years

Cornwallis Hewett was born in 1787 in the East Indies. His father, William Nathan Wright Hewett, was originally a very wealthy man. However, he lost his money because he loved horse-racing too much. Even though his family's money situation changed, Cornwallis still got an excellent education.

He went to Charterhouse School, which is a well-known school. After that, he went to Trinity College, Cambridge in 1806. He earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts, in 1809. He then moved to Downing College, Cambridge. There, he received his Master of Arts degree in 1812. He also got his medical license in 1814, which allowed him to practice medicine.

Becoming a Doctor: Cornwallis Hewett's Career

After getting his medical license, Cornwallis Hewett quickly rose to important positions. In 1814, he was named the Downing Professor of Medicine. This was one of the highest medical jobs at the University of Cambridge. He also became a Fellow and a Tutor at Downing College, Cambridge that same year.

He continued his studies and earned his highest medical degree, a Doctorate of Medicine (M.D.), in 1822. On August 9, 1822, he became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians. He then became a Fellow of this prestigious college on April 12, 1824.

On March 25, 1825, Dr. Hewett was appointed as a physician at St George's Hospital in London. He worked there until 1833. He also received a very special appointment on July 20, 1832. He was named Physician-Extraordinary to the King, William IV. This meant he was one of the King's personal doctors. Even though he had such an important role, he didn't publish any medical books or papers during this time. His successful career even inspired his younger half-brother, Prescott Gardner Hewett, to also join St George's Hospital later on.
