Corona Heights is a cool neighborhood in San Francisco, California. It's located just north of Market Street and the Eureka Valley area. Many people think of Corona Heights as part of the lively Castro and Upper Market neighborhoods.

Where is Corona Heights Located?

The Corona Heights neighborhood stretches between Buena Vista Park and Eureka Valley. The streets here were literally carved out of a large hill. This hill used to cover the area from Buena Vista Park all the way down to Market Street.

The Story of Corona Heights

Quarrying the Hill

In 1899, a big change began on the hill. A company called Gray Brothers Quarry started digging for rocks and making bricks. They removed tons of rock. This created a very different landscape.

The Gray brothers owned three quarries in San Francisco. One was at Corona Heights. Another was on Telegraph Hill. The third was at Thirtieth and Castro, now called Billy Goat Hill.

The company had some problems. Many of the bricks they made were not good quality. They were used for the Cable Car tracks but had to be replaced later. People in the community also got angry. Rocks would fall and hurt people or damage homes. Even though they faced many lawsuits, the Gray brothers kept digging.

The quarrying and the company eventually stopped. This happened after some serious issues with workers and business conflicts.

Building Homes on the Hill

Because of the quarry, new streets were cut into the rock. This made the area a great place for people to build homes. Many houses in Corona Heights have amazing views because they are high up on the hill.

The neighborhood is also close to public transportation like MUNI. It's just a few blocks from The Castro, which has many restaurants and fun places.

Corona Heights Park

At the very top of the hill, where the quarry used to be, you'll find Corona Heights Park. This is a large, open space with awesome views of the city and the bay. The park also has a special fenced area for dogs to play safely.
