The Corozal District is the northernmost district in the country of Belize. In 2000, about 33,894 people lived there. The main town and capital of the district is Corozal Town.

Long ago, the ancient Maya people lived in Corozal. You can still find their old city ruins at Santa Rita, close to Corozal Town, and also at Cerros. These sites show us how advanced the Maya were.

Corozal's Economy

For many years, the Corozal District relied heavily on the sugar industry. There was even a sugar factory in Libertad Village. Today, the economy has changed and become more varied.

How People Make a Living

Growing sugar and other crops like papaya is still very important for many people in rural Corozal. But more and more people are now working in the tourism industry. This means they help visitors enjoy their time in Belize.

A big part of the economy comes from the Commercial Free Zone. This special area is right on the border between Belize and Mexico. Almost 65% of the people in Corozal find jobs here.

Some goods also cross the border unofficially. This can include things like vegetables, fruits, drinks, cigarettes, and fuel.

In Corozal, English is the most commonly spoken language. Spanish is also very widely used. About 80% of people speak English well, and 60% speak Spanish well.

Languages in Corozal Town

Corozal Town, the district's main center, is a mix of different cultures and races from Belize. Many Maya Mestizo people live here. Both Spanish and English are the main languages spoken.

Languages in Other Villages

  • East Indian Communities: Villages like Calcutta, Estrella Village, Libertad, Ranchito, and San Antonio are home to people of East Indian heritage. They speak both English and Spanish very well.
  • Maya Communities: In Chan Chen, Chunox, Cristo Rey, Louisville, Patchakan, San Pedro, San Victor Village, Xaibe, and Yo Chen, you'll find Maya people. They speak Spanish and the Yucatec Maya language very well, along with some English.
  • Maya-Mestizo Communities: Buena Vista, Caledonia, Concepcion, San Narciso, San Roman, and Santa Clara are populated by Maya-Mestizo people. They speak Spanish, and some elders also speak Yucatec Maya. English is not always used daily in these villages.
  • Creole and Hispanic Communities: Progresso, San Andres, and Sarteneja Village have a mix of Creole and Hispanic people. They share their cultures and speak both English and Spanish.
  • Mennonite Community: Little Belize is home to Mennonites, who speak German.

The Corozal District has several schools and colleges that help young people learn and grow.

  • Belize Adventist College and Belize Adventist Junior College are located in Calcutta village.
  • Corozal Community College and Corozal Junior College can be found near San Andres and San Antonio villages.
  • St. Viator Vocational High School is just outside Chunox.
  • Centro Escolar Mexico Junior College (CEMJC) and Escuela Secundaria Tecnica Mexico (E.S.T.M.) are in San Roman village.
