Correa lawrenceana var. latrobeana (reddish-mauve form)

The Correa lawrenceana var. latrobeana is a unique plant that grows only in southeastern Australia. It is a type of Correa lawrenceana. This plant can be a bush or a small tree. It has leaves shaped like an oval or an egg. Its flowers are shaped like tubes and can be greenish-yellow or reddish-mauve. These flowers grow alone or in small groups where the leaves meet the stem.

What Does This Plant Look Like?

The Correa lawrenceana var. latrobeana is usually a shrub, growing up to 3 meters (about 10 feet) tall. It can also be a small tree, reaching up to 16 meters (about 52 feet) high. Its leaves are oval or egg-shaped and grow in pairs opposite each other. They are about 24 to 65 millimeters (1 to 2.5 inches) long and 7 to 34 millimeters (0.3 to 1.3 inches) wide. The underside of the leaves is covered with soft, felt-like hairs that are cream or rust-colored.

The flowers grow alone or in groups of up to seven. They appear where the leaves join the stem or at the ends of branches. Each flower has a stalk that is 7 to 25 millimeters (0.3 to 1 inch) long. The base of the flower, called the calyx, is cup-shaped and 4 to 7 millimeters (0.15 to 0.3 inches) long. It has fuzzy, rust-colored hairs and a wavy edge. The main part of the flower, called the corolla, is shaped like a tube. It is 25 to 30 millimeters (1 to 1.2 inches) long. The flowers can be greenish-yellow or reddish-mauve. They mostly bloom in the spring.

How This Plant Got Its Name

This special correa was first officially described in 1856. A botanist named Samuel Hannaford wrote about it. He used notes from another famous botanist, Ferdinand von Mueller. Hannaford gave it the name Correa latrobeana. He published his description in a book called Jottings in Australia.

Later, in 1998, another botanist named Paul Wilson made a change. He decided that Correa latrobeana was actually a type, or "variety," of C. lawrenceana. So, he renamed it C. lawrenceana var. latrobeana. This new name was published in a science journal called Nuytsia.

Where Does It Grow?

This variety of correa grows in forests or thick scrubland. It often likes to grow near streams. You can find it in New South Wales, starting from the Goulburn area and going south. It also grows in eastern Victoria. Some places where it lives include Buchan, Mount Buffalo, Mount Baw Baw, Warburton, and Healesville. It also stretches to the southwest of Melbourne, as far as the Otway Ranges.
