It was started by Simón Bolívar, a famous leader who helped many South American countries become independent. This newspaper is known as the oldest independent newspaper in Latin America and South America.
The Correo del Orinoco was published once a week from 1818 to 1822. It was printed in a city called Angostura, which is now known as Ciudad Bolívar. This city is located right on the Orinoco River.
Today, the name Correo del Orinoco is used by a different newspaper. This newer newspaper was started in 2009 by the Government of Venezuela.
