Corrinne Yu is a talented American game programmer. She has helped create many popular video games, like King's Quest, Quake II, and Halo 4. Corrinne also worked on important game technologies, such as the Unreal Engine 3 and special graphics tools for Microsoft. She even helped with advanced computer graphics at Nvidia. Besides games, she designed experiments for nuclear physics research, which is about how tiny parts of atoms work.

Corrinne Yu's Early Life and Education

Corrinne Yu went to California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. There, she studied electrical engineering. This helped her prepare for her exciting career as a professional programmer.

Developing Amazing Video Games

Corrinne Yu started her career programming for the King's Quest game series. These games were made for the Apple II computer. Even early on, she created her own 3D engine projects. She sold these special programs to different companies.

She also worked on QuickDraw 3D, which was an early tool for making computer graphics. Corrinne helped program the game Zombie. She also created the video game engine used in Spec Ops: Rangers Lead The Way.

In November 1997, Corrinne joined a video game company called Ion Storm. She worked on the 2001 game Anachronox. She also became the Director of Technology at the studio. While at Ion Storm, she was in charge of the Quake 2 code. This code was used in many games based on that engine.

In November 1998, she moved to 3D Realms as the Lead Technology Programmer. Later, Corrinne worked as an engine programmer at Gearbox Software. This company created games like Brothers in Arms and Borderlands. Corrinne made big changes to the Epic Unreal Engine 3. She focused on making lighting, shadows, and physics look even better in games.

Working on the Halo Series

In 2008, Microsoft Studios hired Corrinne Yu. She became the Principal Engine Architect for 343 Industries. This studio was created in 2007 to manage the Halo game series. This happened after Bungie, the original creators, separated from Microsoft.

Corrinne programmed the lighting and facial animations for the 2012 game Halo 4. She also developed new technologies for the game. While working on Halo, Corrinne explored new lighting methods. She even invented new ways to make light bounce realistically in games. Microsoft applied for a software patent for her amazing lighting work on Halo.

New Adventures in Tech

In November 2013, Corrinne Yu joined Naughty Dog. This is a famous video game developer that is part of Sony Computer Entertainment. She worked as a graphics programmer on PlayStation 4 projects, including Uncharted.

In November 2014, she left Naughty Dog. She then joined Amazon.com to work on their Amazon Prime Air program. This program focuses on using drones for deliveries. In March 2018, she left Amazon and joined General Motors. There, she became a Vice President of Engineering.

In 2009, Corrinne Yu won the Best in Engineering award internationally at the GDC (Game Developers Conference). This award is given by her peers in the industry. She won it for her excellent programming work.

In 2010, the gaming website Kotaku named Corrinne Yu as one of the 10 most influential women in games over the past decade. She is the only Director of Technology and the only engine programmer on this important list.
