Cortland is a small, unincorporated community located in Tucker County, West Virginia, in the United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's usually governed by the county.
This community is found where West Virginia Secondary Routes 35 and 35/18 meet. Cortland was first known as Cortlands. Its name was officially changed to Cortland on March 26, 1888, by the post office. For many years, Cortland had its own school, Cortland Grade School, which served local students until it closed in 1933.
