The Corydoras panda is a small type of catfish. It belongs to a group of fish called Corydoras, which are part of the Callichthyidae family. These fish are found in rivers in Peru and Ecuador in South America.
This fish was first discovered by Randolph H. Richards in 1968. Later, in 1971, two scientists named Nijssen and Isbrücker officially named it Corydoras panda. They chose this name because the fish has black markings around its eyes, which look a lot like the markings on a giant panda. Because of this, people often call it the panda corydoras or panda catfish.
The panda corydoras is a very popular fish for people to keep in their home aquariums. They are known for being peaceful and fun to watch.
Where They Live
Panda corydoras fish live in the clear, flowing rivers of Peru and Ecuador. These rivers are usually cool and have sandy or rocky bottoms. They like to swim in groups, searching for food.
Why They Are Called "Panda"
The name Corydoras panda comes from the way these fish look. They have a light body color, usually pale pink or tan. But the most special part is the three black spots on their bodies. One spot is on their dorsal fin (the fin on their back). Another spot is near the base of their tail. The third, and most noticeable, spot is a black band that goes across their eyes. This eye band makes them look very similar to the famous giant panda bear.
Keeping Them as Pets
Many fish lovers enjoy keeping panda corydoras in their aquariums. They are known for being friendly and peaceful. They get along well with other small, calm fish. These fish are also fun to watch as they swim along the bottom of the tank, looking for tiny bits of food. They need clean water and a tank that is set up to feel like their natural river home.
