Discovering Cosalá's Past
Cosalá was once known as the "Royal of the Eleven Thousand Virgins." This long name was later shortened to the "Royal Mines of Cosalá." Today, it is simply called Cosalá.
In 1826, Cosalá became the capital of the western state. This decision was made by Francisco Iriarte y Conde, who was the governor at the time. He moved the capital from El Fuerte, Sinaloa to protect it. There was a threat of attack from the forces of Juan Banderas, a leader during the Yaqui Wars.
Governor Iriarte also brought printing to the region. The first newspaper in Sinaloa, called "The Impartial Spectator," was published right here in Cosalá. For a long time, Cosalá was a very important place in Sinaloa's social and political life.
Exploring Cosalá's Surroundings
Cosalá is located about 155 kilometers (96 miles) from Culiacán, the state capital. The area around Cosalá has many interesting natural spots.
You can visit the Vado Hondo waterfall. There are also two town reservoirs, "Comedero" and "El Salto." These lakes are great for fishing, especially for largemouth bass.
Cosalá's Unique Climate
Cosalá has a Köppen Tropical Wet and Dry climate. This means it has a wet season and a dry season. Even though it's just north of the Tropic of Cancer, its climate is a bit different.
Cosalá often has bigger temperature changes between day and night. This is especially true in winter. Temperatures can drop to about 10°C (50°F) in January and February. This is colder than Mazatlán, a city further south.
Daytime temperatures in Cosalá can also get quite hot. They can reach around 37°C (99°F) in May and June. The lowest temperature ever recorded was 1°C (34°F).
